The Catrachos were runners up in 1991 when they lost the final in a penalty shootout 3-4 to the United States after a 0-0 draw. Honduras has only missed one of 14 Gold Cups. The last two times Honduras reached the semifinals they lost to the U.S., 1-2 in 2005 and 3-1 in 2013. 2017 was the first time Honduras did not advance past the group stage and did not score any goals for the first time while managed by Colombian Jorge Luis Pinto.
