KANSAS CITY, Kansas -- The United States and Panama will square off at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City on Wednesday night, with the clash between the two sides to decide first place in Group D of the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup.
The U.S. is perfect in two group games coming into this contest, having beaten Guyana 4-0 in their opening match in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and taking down Trinidad and Tobago 6-0 this past Saturday in Cleveland.
While Panama has six points from two matches as well, they were given a stern test by a spirited Guyana team, Panama ultimately winning that game in Cleveland by a 4-2 scoreline. Panama defeated Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 in the opening match of the group phase.
With a superior goal-difference, a win or a draw will clinch the top spot for the U.S., while only a win will do the job for Panama.
Panama does have some history on its side in that regard, as the only team to ever beat the U.S. in the group stage of the Gold Cup -- a 2-1 win in Tampa, Florida in the 2011 edition.
The two sides have also previously played a group stage game at Children’s Mercy Park, a 1-1 draw in 2015.
Wednesday’s match between the U.S. and Panama will kick off at 9 PM ET.
