Mexico-USA: Gold Cup rivalry sprouts CONCACAF Cup

PASADENA, California – There’s a general belief among football fans/observers that Mexico and the United States have met in a great majority of the 13 contested CONCACAF Gold Cups.

It is true that they have combined to win 12 of the titles (Mexico 7, U.S. 5), but the North American rivals have squared off only six times in the competition’s 24-year history, including on five occasions in the final.

That’s what makes their CONCACAF Cup encounter on Saturday so intriguing…they rarely confront each other with silverware on the line.

While the winner will be delighted to lift the trophy at the Rose Bowl (the venue for the last Mexico-U.S. Gold Cup final in 2011), a well-earned trip to the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup promises to be equally satisfying.
