MEXICO CITY – Mexico announced Monday a 23-player roster, as well as seven alternates, for its participation in the 2015 Copa America, which will be played June 11 – July 4 in Chile.
The selection, which must be finalized by June 1, features seven players from the side that reached the round of 16 in the 2014 FIFA World Cup: goalkeepers Jesus Corona and Alfredo Talavera; defender Rafael Marquez; midfielders Javier Aquino, Isaac Brizuela (alternate) and Marco Fabian; plus, forward Raul Jimenez.
Marquez, 36, plays for Italy’s Hellas Verona and started all four games in Brazil, finding the back of the net in a 3-1 win over Croatia.
Also earning a call-up is Pumas forward Eduardo Herrera, who scored in his international debut on March 31, 2015, a 1-0 win over Paraguay. The 26-year-old has notched five goals in 17 appearances during the current Liga MX Clausura season after netting nine times in the Apertura.
Training camp – for those players whose club seasons have ended -- will open on May 17 at the Mexican Football Federation’s High Performance Center.
The Mexicans will commence their Copa America campaign against Group A rival Bolivia on June 12 in Viña del Mar, before facing Chile (June 15 in Santiago) and Ecuador (June 19 in Rancagua).
It is widely expected that Mexico will use a different roster in an attempt to regain the CONCACAF Gold Cup title in July.
