HARRISON, New Jersey – Haiti scored twice in the second half to secure three more points and a perfect group stage record in a 2-1 victory over Costa Rica in 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup Group B on Monday night at Red Bull Arena.
It is the first time that Haiti has won its group in a Gold Cup.
Both teams came out looking for the first goal of the match and in the 12’ Costa Rica broke the deadlock when Haiti failed to clear its lines.
Veteran FW Alvaro Saborio nodded a header that deflected off of Haiti DF Djimy-Bend Alexis and into goal to hand Costa Rica an early lead of 1-0.
Things changed in the 56’ with a Francisco Calvo foul in the area and Haiti FW Duckens Nazon, with a right-footed shot, put away the penalty and leveled the score 1-1.
In the 80’, Alexis then made up for his earlier own goal by finding the back of the net with a powerful right-footed shot into the top right corner of net for a 2-1 Haiti lead.
Costa Rica did not give up and kept pushing forward as Mayron George had one last shot in the 90+3’, but it went wide left, allowing Haiti to emerge victorious.
