PHILADELPHIA – Just two days after scoring the title-clinching goal for the United States in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final, Stoke City’s Brek Shea suffered an injury in a friendly against the Philadelphia Union.
The 23-year-old midfielder, who had a goal and an assist in Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over the Major League Soccer side, was taken off the field after a Matt Kassel tackle.
“We have been waiting a while to get Brek back here, and up until the injury he looked very bright, very dangerous and appeared to have a real understanding of what his role was on the left hand side of midfield,” Stoke City head coach Mark Hughes was quoted as saying on the club’s website. “He will go for a scan tomorrow, but we know that we will definitely be without him for a number of weeks. It looks fairly serious, but fingers crossed it isn’t anymore serious than we already know it is.”
Shea, who has also played in the CONCACAF Champions League with FC Dallas, has two goals in 23 games for the United States.
