For club & country, Wallace excels at Red Bull Arena

HARRISON, New Jersey -- Despite playing for the crosstown rival, Costa Rica’s Rodney Wallace is really enjoying the experience of playing at Red Bull Arena.

Just about two weeks ago, Wallace and his New York City FC teammates won the latest edition of the heated Hudson River Derby, picking up a 2-0 win over the New York Red Bulls in hostile territory.

On Friday night, he assisted on Marco Ureña’s goal as Costa Rica picked up a 1-0 win against Honduras in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

“I think they were both special,” said Wallace, when asked about his performances at the impressive venue.  “With NYCFC, it was my first derby and it was a special game.  Today, it was my first game here with the national team and it was a good three points.”

Little seems to separate Costa Rica and Honduras, which battled to a 1-1 draw in a World Cup qualifier on March 28, 2017.  With another qualifier to come on October 6, it’s a fierce time in this particular matchup.

“It’s always a bit of a war with these guys, every time we play with each other,” Wallace finished.  “There are some emotions there.  There’s that feeling of a rivalry.  We’ve played each other a lot and they know us and we know them.  It’s a matter of who’s going to play smarter and outdo the other team.”
