Costa Rica MF Borges: “It’s a special moment to start the tournament here”

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Costa Rica will open its 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup campaign in Group B when it faces Nicaragua at the Estadio Nacional, and in front of its fans for the first time.

La Sele who will seek to advance the group stage under Head Coach Gustavo Matosas’ command, and the manager acknowledged that he is ready to debut for the first time in a Gold Cup match.

"I'm looking forward to this, I need to compete for the points, that moves me,” said Matosas in Saturday’s pre-match press conference. “The adrenaline generated by the game, I was looking forward to this, this will do all of us good.”

"We create the atmosphere, it's a very special moment to be able to start a tournament here," added midfielder Celso Borges. "We invite the people to be present [Sunday]."

While Costa Rica is ready to face Nicaragua, Matosas cataloged the Pinoleros as "a difficult opponent" since it will be the first time that they will have faced off in the Gold Cup.

"In football you cannot be so radical and I'm thinking of Nicaragua, I'm thinking of beating Nicaragua, it's a tough opponent, Nicaragua [on Sunday] is Real Madrid, [on Sunday] we have the final of the world. The opponent is excellent, and we have to go out and win the match," said Matosas.

Also in Saturday’s press conference, Matosas confirmed FW Mayron George as a starter against Nicaragua.
