CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – Lucas Cavallini and Jonathan David each scored hat-tricks to power Canada past Cuba 7-0 in 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup Group A action at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Cavallini and David became the first teammates to score a hat-trick in a single Gold Cup match.
With the victory, Canada has qualified for the quarterfinals.
Canada enjoyed a strong start and opened the scoring in the 3’ when a Junior Hoillet cross found David.
The momentum stayed with Canada and in the 21’ a deep cross from Hoilett deflected off the foot of Cuba DF Jorge Kindelan, which then struck the post and was tapped in by Cavallini for a 2-0 lead.
The Canadians were able to tack on another two scores right before halftime, both through Cavallini, who fired in crosses from David and Alphonso Davies, respectively, for a 4-0 lead, making Cavallini just the sixth player to score a first half hat-trick in a Gold Cup.
After the restart Canada got back to work and made it 5-0 in the 50’ when Hoilett pounced on a blocked shot.
Cuba never stopped fighting and Luis Paradela came within inches of scoring but just missed over the crossbar.
Back came Canada and David tallied another two goals in the 71’ and 77’ to round out the 7-0 scoreline.
