Caribbean Cup: Groups 1 and 3 update

GROUP 1 - Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Bermuda 1, Puerto Rico 2

In Friday's group opener at Sylvio Cator Stadium, Hector Ramos scored in the 5th minute of second-half injury time to lift Puerto Rico to a 2-1 win over Bermuda.

Joseph Marrero gave the eventual winner a 1-0 lead in the 68th minute, but Antwan Russel equalized 10 minutes later.

Puerto Rico's Scott Jones was ejected in the 83rd minute for abusive language directed at the referee after being substituted.

Haiti 7, Saint Martin 0

In the nightcap, Jean-Philippe Peguero and Jean Monuma combined to score for five goals, powering host Haiti to a 7-0 win over Saint Martin.

Kevin LaFrance and Jean-Eudes Maurice added single strikes in 70th and second-half injury time, respectively.

Peguero put Haiti ahead in the 4th minute and completed his hat-trick with two goals in the last five minutes of the first half, while Monuma tallied in the 22nd and 40th minutes.

On Sunday, Puerto Rico will face Saint Martin, while Bermuda will look to bounce back against Haiti.

GROUP 3 - Rivière-Pilote, Martinique

British Virgin Islands 0, Suriname 4

Suriname clinched qualification to the second round with a 4-0 win over the British Virgin Islands at the Stade Municipal En Camée.

Goals in the 35th and 42nd minutes by Stefano Rijssel sandwiched a 36th minute Giovanni Drenthe effort.  It was Rijssel's second brace in two games.

Donovan Loswijk closed the Surinamese goal account nine minutes from time.

With maximum points from its opening two first-round games, Suriname will advance to the competition's next phase with a game to spare.  The British Virgin Islands have been eliminated from contention.

Martinique 5, Montserrat 0

On the strength of four goals from the in-form Kevin Parsemain, Martinique easily defeated Montserrat 5-0 and sealed qualification to the second round.

Parsemain, 24, scored six goals in Martinique's 16-0 win over the British Virgin Islands on Wednesday.

Steeve Gustan chipped in with a 9th minute tally, four minutes after Parsemain gave the host a 1-0 lead.

Martinique, which got additional goals from Parsemain in the 20th, 59th and 61st minutes, has six points from two games and will meet Suriname on Sunday for the group title.  Eliminated Montserrat will face the British Virgin Islands in what amounts to a consolation game.

The winners and runners-up from Groups 1-3 as well as the best runner-up from Group 4 or Group 5 will advance to a second, three-group round in late October.

The top two teams from each second-round group will qualify for the Caribbean Cup finals set for December 3-15 along with two-time defending champion Jamaica and host Antigua & Barbuda.

The top four teams from the final round qualify for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
