Caribbean Cup: First Round, Day One Recap

KINGSTON, Jamaica – First round play in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Caribbean Cup opened on Wednesday with eight matches at various locations throughout the region. serves up a recap of all the evening’s action

GROUP 3 (at Fort de France, Martinique -- Stade Pierre-Aliker)

Martinique 6, Bonaire 0

Captain Gael Germany scored three goals as Martinique earned a 6-0 win over Bonaire.  The host took a 1-0 lead into the break thanks Germany’s 35th minute strike.  The floodgates opened six minutes into the second half as Germany added a second and then went on to complete the his hat-trick in the 76th minute.  Jose Goron (81’, 90’+1) netted a brace, while Mathias Coureur (61’) also got on the scoresheet.

Barbados 1, Suriname 1

Jerney Faerber scored late to grab a share of the points for Suriname in a 1-1 draw against Barbados.  Romelle Burgess gave Barbados a 70th minute lead, but Faerber leveled with nine minutes left in normal time.

GROUP 4 – (at Bayamon, Puerto Rico -- Estadio Juan Ramon Loubriel)

Puerto Rico 2, Curacao 2

Curacao rallied from a two-goal deficit to tie Puerto Rico, 2-2.  Joseph Marrero (7’, 51’) staked the host to a 2-0 lead, but Curacao mounted a brave comeback as Prince Mathilda (59’) and Shelton Martis (82’) struck for the vital goals.

Grenada 1, French Guiana 1

Grenada let an early lead slip against French Guiana in a 1-1 draw.  After a goalless first half, Terry James (58’) found the target for the Spice Boys.  The celebrations didn’t last long as Sylvio Breleur equalized just one minute later.

GROUP 5 – (at St. John’s, Antigua & Barbuda -- Antigua Recreation Grounds)

St. Vincent & the Grenadines 1, Dominican Republic 0

Nazir McBurnette scored the only goal as St. Vincent & the Grenadines registered a 1-0 victory over the Dominican Republic.  Jarrel McMaster delivered the cross that McBurnette tucked away three minutes before halftime.

Antigua & Barbuda 6 Anguilla 0

England-based midfielder Kieran Murtagh scored twice as the Antigua & Barbuda outdistanced Anguilla, 6-0.  The 25-year-old (35’, 66’) found the net once in half, energizing the enthusiastic home crowd.  Hull City forward Calaum Jahraldo-Martin (8’), Tavaughn Harriette (44’), Peter Byers (55’) and Quinton Griffith (68’) were also on target.

GROUP 6 – (at Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis – Warner Park)

Guyana 0, Dominica 0

Despite several scoring opportunities for both sides, Guyana and Dominica played to a 0-0 draw.  Dominica had a chance to win the match outright, but Kenny Jno Baptise sailed a penalty kick into the stands.  The Guyanese, making a return to international football after nearly a two-year absence, held on despite being reduced to 10 men following defender Steffon Ramsay’s ejection for his second yellow card.

St. Kitts & Nevis 0, St. Lucia 0

Host St. Kitts & Nevis and battled to 0-0 draw in a match that saw both teams be issued a pair of yellow cards.
