LA CORUÑA, Spain – Costa Rica international Celso Borges has joined Spain’s Deportivo de la Coruña, the La Liga side announced Wednesday.
Borges arrives on loan via Swedish club AIK. Deportivo will have an option to purchase the player on a two-year contract at the end of the season.
At the introductory press conference, Borges made his objectives clear.
“The sporting priority of Deportivo is stay in the first division and that is what is being aimed for,” said the 26-year-old midfielder. “Anything after that is a gain.”
Despite not having played in a match since the end of the Swedish season on November 1, Borges is confident that fitness will not be a concern.
“I feel good physically,” he said. “Obviously, I have to get myself into the concept of the team, but I know that things are going to go well. I have to be as prepared as possible for when the club needs it.”
Since leaving Saprissa in 2009, Borges has played solely in Scandinavia. His first four seasons were spent in Norway with Fredrikstad and the last three with AIK.
Borges has scored 19 goals in 71 appearances for Costa Rica. He has played in 30 World Cup qualifiers and was on the field in all five of the Ticos’ matches during their run to the 2014 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals. In 13 CONCACAF Gold Cup games, Borges has scored two goals. He has also won two Central American Cup titles (2013, 2014), netting four times in 11 outings.
