Although built expressly for American football, Giants Stadium has served as the site for some of the largest crowds in U.S. soccer history and become internationally renowned for being the last home of the Pele-led Cosmos, its use as a venue for the 1994 World Cup, a FIFA World All-Star Game and friendlies involving teams such as Manchester United, Juventus and FC Barcelona. Located across the Hudson River only 6.9 miles (11 kilometers) from Times Square, Giants Stadium also has been the site for events ranging from concerts to a papal Mass celebrated by Pope John Paul II. This will be the second time in four years Giants Stadium has hosted the final of the Gold Cup, having witnessed the United States' penalty kick victory over Panama in 2005. Although home to the New York Red Bulls since 1996, the stadium is scheduled to be replaced by a new one, under construction adjacent to the old facility. The new building is scheduled to open in 2010, when the Red Bulls will have their own home, Red Bull Arena, in Harrison, New Jersey.
