Columbus Crew Stadium was the first facility built expressly for a team in Major League Soccer, constructed in only nine months, and provided the impetus for the more than half of a dozen that have followed. It's location in the heartland of the United States has made it a favorite destination for the U.S. national team, which has played seven times at the stadium since it opened in 1999. Crew Stadium has hosted five World Cup qualifiers, including the last two against Mexico in games that have been called "La Guerra Fria" (the Cold War). The stadium was a venue for the 2003 Women's World Cup, and was the site of the 2001 MLS Cup championship game, the MLS All-Star Game in 2000 and 2005, and two American college soccer championship tournament finals.
