Having been the site of numerous high-profile soccer events since its opening, Qwest Field will add to its resume in 2009 by hosting Gold Cup matches for the second time in four years. It also will become the regular home of the Major League Soccer expansion club Sounders FC, which will begin play in 2009. Promoted when built as a dual purpose facility for American football and soccer, the stadium primarily is known as the home of the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League. But it also has been the site of games involving the U.S. national team and friendlies such as Manchester United-Celtic FC in 2003 and Chelsea-Celtic FC in 2004. Qwest Field is built on the site of the Kingdome, which served as a home of the Sounders in the old North American Soccer League and was razed in 2000.
