Affectionately referred to as "the cage" by Florida International University students and administration, FIU Stadium originally opened as a 7,000-seat venue on the University Park campus for American football and athletics (track and field). It recently completed an 18-month expansion and was reopened in September with an increased capacity of 20,000. The running track has been removed and another scheduled phase of the expansion should further increase the capacity to 45,000 by 2011. The stadium was part of a bid by businessman R. Marcelo Claure and FC Barcelona as the possible home of an expansion team in Major League Soccer. Gold Cup games have been played in Miami every time beginning in 1998, but at the Orange Bowl which was razed in 2008.
