After playing host to the 1994 World Cup and the four-time MLS Cup champion D.C. United for 13 seasons, this will be the first Gold Cup for a stadium that also has been home to baseball (Senators, Nationals) and American football teams (Redskins, Federals). It also was home to four teams in the old North American Soccer League (Whips, Darts, Diplomats and Team America) as well as the Washington Freedom of the defunct Women's United Soccer Association. The stadium has been a favorite of the U.S. national team, hosting 16 matches over the past 17 years with the USA posting a 10-3-3 record. It has hosted three MLS Cup championship games, two MLS All-Star Games and twice staged the finals of the former CONCACAF Champions Cup (1997, 1998).
