The Coliseum, as it is known by Bay Area residents, makes its return to the Gold Cup after more than a decade. First opened in 1966, the Coliseum was conceived by city officials as a means to change public perceptions of Oakland. Together with the adjacent Oracle Arena, the Coliseum forms the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Complex. The 63,000-seat building is the home of the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League and the Oakland Athletics of Major League Baseball and is the only stadium that is home to both an NFL and MLB team. Originally designed as a multipurpose stadium primarily for baseball, the Coliseum received a $200 million renovation in 1996 to accommodate the return of the Raiders from Los Angeles, turning the venue into more of a football/soccer stadium. Its soccer history is not steeped, but the Coliseum has been a favorite of the Mexican national team, which has attracted large partisan crowds for friendlies. The Coliseum also has hosted friendlies for both the U.S. men's and women's national teams and, more recently, Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes for three home games during the 2008 season.
