This is the third straight trip and fourth overall to the Gold Cup for Panama, which reached the final in 2005, where it fell on penalties to the United States. After qualifying in 2007 as the runner-up from the Central American Nations Cup, this time La Marea Roja (Red Tide) arrives as the UNCAF champion. It avenged its loss on penalties to Costa Rica in the 2007 Copa de Naciones de UNCAF final, beating the Ticos in February on penalties after scoring only two goals en route to the title match. Panama's UNCAF title was its first major international championship and first since winning the Central American and Caribbean (CCCF) crown in 1951.
