As one of the top-five finishers in the UNCAF Nations Cup, Honduras, a late host of the event after Panama was unable to secure an adequate stadium, qualified for its ninth Gold Cup. Los Catrachos fell to eventual champion Panama in the semifinals, but came back to defeat El Salvador in the third-place match. Since a third-place finish in the 2001 Copa America, Honduras has been on a steady rise and is now considered one of the top squads in CONCACAF. Only once (2002) has Honduras failed to qualify for the Gold Cup and it reached the quarterfinals in 2007 before being upset by Guadeloupe. Honduras has reached the FIFA World Cup final once, in 1982, and is still alive in the final hexagonal stage.
