Grenada is the smallest nation ever to qualify for the Gold Cup. With a population of about 90,000 inhabiting the 344-square-kilometer (132-square-mile) island between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean just north of Trinidad, Grenada eclipses St. Vincent & the Grenadines, which played in the 1996 Gold Cup. Although not fully independent from Britain until 1974, Grenada has been playing international soccer since 1934. It reached this year's championship by finishing second in the Caribbean Championship, losing to Jamaica 2-0 in the final. It was the second time it has finished runner-up in the Caribbean Championship, matching its 1989 achievement. The Spice Boyz outlasted Cuba on penalties in the semifinals of the Caribbean cup, one of six victories in 12 games en route to the continental championship.
