El Salvador coach Ruben Israel has promised to try and make his team a contender in this year's tournament. Israel was appointed coach in April replacing Luis Rugamas, who was given the job as manager of El Salvador following Carlos de los Cobos' departure after the team's elimination from World Cup qualifying in 2009. Israel will have a good opportunity to make a mark in the region when it opens Group A play against Mexico at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The Cuscatlecos haven't made it out of the first round in the Gold Cup since 2003 where it reached the quarterfinals for the second time in its history.
