El Salvador is enjoying one of its best runs in recent years, returning to the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying for the first time since 1998. It has never won more than one game in any of its previous five appearances at the Gold Cup, but reached the quarterfinals in consecutive tries (2002, 2003). After a 1-1 draw with Nicaragua to open the Central American Nations Cup in January, it recovered to reach the semifinals and earn a sixth trip to the Gold Cup.
