Costa Rica thought it was on its way to its second Gold Cup final in 2009, but was halted by penalties against Mexico. Instead, it settled for another semifinal, its second since 1993. It has been a quarterfinalist four times. Costa Rica was runner-up when it lost to the United States 2-0 in the 2002 title match. This time Los Ticos are coached by the Argentine-born Ricardo La Volpe, Mexico's coach from 2002 to 2006. La Volpe is Costa Rica's third coach since the 2009 Gold Cup.
