Canada has had its share of Gold Cup success, having qualified for the tournament nine times. Its greatest triumph came in 2000 when the Canadians captured the title, shocking defending champion Mexico in extra time in the quarterfinals, defeating Trinidad & Tobago in the semifinals and beating invitee Colombia 2-0 in the final in Los Angeles. Canada also reached the semifinals in 2007, losing to host and eventual champion United States 2-1, and finished third in 2002 following a penalty kick shootout loss to the U.S. The Canucks regional success hasn't translated to the world stage, though. Canada has appeared in just one FIFA World Cup (1986) and has failed to qualify for the last six competitions, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
