Defensive organization and tactics:

Except for the games against Panama, Costa Rica and the USA, Mexico's defense was not under too much pressure. The other teams showed tremendous respect for them and allowed then to possess the ball and utilize space at will. Jose MAGALLON (No. 2) and Ismael RODRIGUEZ (No. 3) consistently got better as the tournament progressed, while Israel CASTRO (No. 8) and Gerardo TORRADO (No. 6) controlled the middle of the pitch with aplomb. Mexico switched from a three-man defense during the qualifying round of the tournament to a more traditional 4-3-3 for the semifinal and final. Not a beat was missed and the adjustment to new responsibilities showcased the adaptability/versatility of the Mexican players individually, as well as a team.

Attacking organization and tactics:

Mexico's three-man forward line got better and better as Alberto MEDINA (No. 7), Miguel SABAH (No. 14), Giovani DOS SANTOS (No. 17) started to connect in a more fluid manner. Their ability to play combinations kept opponents constantly at bay. In addition, the skill level and tactical awareness displayed by Gerardo TORRADO (No. 6) was impressive. His capacity to know when to attack and when to help defensively was an important weapon. Carlos ESQUIVEL (No. 16) distinguished himself as a skillful player on the flank, who could join the attack with ease at anytime. Fausto PINTO (No. 5) was a very aggressive marker, but not heavily involved in the attack. Despite that, he was a danger in overlapping and crossing when needed.
