Copa CentroAmericana

Walter Martinez gave "Los Catrachos" the lead in the eighth minute and Emil Martinez added the eventual winner in the 53rd as Honduras beat its regional rival at the Copa Centroamericana for the first time since 1999.

Costa Rica, which has won a record six titles and was appearing in its fourth straight final, finished runner-up for a second consecutive time.

Marcos Urena pulled Costa Rica within a goal in the 73rd, but it wasn't enough to avoid seeing its unbeaten streak against Honduras at the Copa Centroamerica end at five.

The match, which followed Panama's 5-4 victory on penalties after a goalless draw with El Salvador in the third-place game, completed the Central American qualifier which will send all four teams as well as Guatemala to June's CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Honduras' victory was a rematch of the first-round game in which the Catrachos equalized in injury time to draw 1-1 with Costa Rica.

Costa Rica was the first to create a chance when Urena rolled a shot wide in the third minute, but Honduras took the lead five minutes later. Juan Garcia unleashed a left-footed shot from the top of the area off the far post and it rebounded back across the goalmouth.

Garcia corralled his own rebound and lifted a short cross into the middle of the area where Walter Martinez finished unmarked into an open net from the six, with Costa Rica goalkeeper Donny Grant sprawled on the ground.

Emil Martinez doubled the lead with a free kick from a step outside the area, curling a left-footed effort over a five-man wall just inside the right post. A diving Grant was able to get his left hand to the ball, but only managed to deflect it into the net.

It was the first time in 22 matches at the Centroamericana that Costa Rica permitted more than one goal.

Costa Rica's chances were further diminished in the 63rd when Dario Delgado received his second yellow card in 12 minutes, both for fouls on Walter Martinez.

Urena, who was denied by Honduran keeper Noel Valladares twice in the first half, finally converted to give Costa Rica hope. He collected a ball inside the top of the penalty area, dribbled across the 18 before twisting to hit a low ball that rolled past a screened Valladares inside the left post.

Costa Rica had the better of play for the remainder of the game, but Valladares made several saves - including another to thwart Urena in the 81st -- to preserve the victory.

Panama 0, El Salvador 0 (Panama wins 5-4 on penalties)

Amilcar Henriquez converted the clinching penalty in a match that Panama prevailed after being thwarted by goalkeeper Dagoberto Portillo on a handful of chances, while El Salvador generated only one shot on goal.

The result was some consolation for Panama, which was looking to defend its title on home soil and was beaten in the semifinals on penalties by Costa Rica.

The match was delayed twice in the second half when a swarm of flying insects appeared to nest in the upper left corner of the Salvadoran goal. Honduran referee Benigno Pineda first suspended the game in the 56th minute while ground crew personnel fumigated the area.

After a 5½-minute delay, the game resumed, but the insects returned in the 73rd -- forcing another fumigation that lasted six minutes. The suspended play resulted in an additional 13½ minutes of stoppage time.

It was the second time in a little more than a year that El Salvador was the victim of insects. Its World Cup qualifier in October 2009 at Estadio Azteca was interrupted in the first half when flying pests nestled along the crossbar in Mexico's 4-1 win that clinched El Tri's trip to South Africa.

Panama had the far better of play, generating several chances, including its best in the 87th when Portillo made a diving left-handed reaction block of Roberto Brown's header off a cross from Henriquez.

El Salvador, which generated few chances, didn't require Panamanian keeper Jaime Penedo to touch the ball until he came off his line to clear a rolling pass in the 30th minute, and didn't handle the ball until a weak rolling shot in the 64th.

It was the third consecutive fourth-place finish for "Los Cuscatlecos", who were looking to match their best finish of third in the Central American nations championship, last achieved in 2003.
