SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - By means of a draw, El Salvador on Tuesday night became the fourth Central American team to qualify for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
El Salvador and Panama ended Group B play tied on two points, the same total as fellow Group B participant Honduras, which advanced in first place by virtue of goals scored.
The Cuscatlecos and Canaleros remained tied on points, goal difference, and goals scored, necessitating a draw to determine which of the two would advance to the semifinals of the 2013 UNCAF Copa Centroamericana, as well as earn a direct berth to the Gold Cup.
The draw, which was televised live and presided over by UNCAF officials, established that El Salvador would be the group's second-place team, and earn the ticket to the confederation's biennial championship.
El Salvador now faces Costa Rica in one semifinal, while Panama will take on Guatemala in Friday's fifth-place match to decide the winner of the final Gold Cup on offer in Central America.
