Mexico's Golden Generation led El Tri to its fifth Gold Cup title and first since 2003, outlasting Costa Rica on penalties in the semifinals and overwhelming the United States in the championship match. Mexico outscored its opponents 15-2 en route to the crown, including 5-0 over the Americans, who used a revamped squad after finishing second in the Confederations Cup the month prior. For the first time the tournament was played in 13 different venues in 13 different cities.
