The United States won its second straight title and equaled Mexico for most crowns with four, rallying from a first-half deficit to beat El Tri in the final 2-1 on Benny Feilhaber's dramatic right-footed volley from just outside the penalty area in the 73rd minute. Mexico reached the championship match after edging Costa Rica 1-0 in extra time in the quarterfinals, a match in which three members of the Ticos were ejected. For the first time since 1996, there were no teams from outside the confederation, enabling Guadeloupe to play in its first Gold Cup. It capitalized by advancing to the semifinals before being eliminated by Mexico 1-0.
