The United States needed an injury time header by Oguchi Onyewu to subdue Honduras 2-1 in the semifinals and then outlasted Panama on penalties to win its third crown. For the sixth straight time guest teams participated, but South Africa and Colombia - making its third appearance in four tournaments, would be the last sides to be invited from outside the confederation. For the first time since the tournament was expanded to a 12-team event in 2000, the first round was conducted with three four-team groups rather than four three-team groups.
