Defending champion Canada, which won the crown in 2000 after escaping the first round by a coin flip with Korea Republic, this time had to win a drawing of lots with Haiti and Ecuador to advance to the knockout stage. It was eliminated in the semifinals on penalties by the USA after a 0-0 draw. Mexico was eliminated at the quarterfinal stage for the second straight time, ousted by the Korea Republic on penalties after a 0-0 draw. Costa Rica, which reached the final by allowing only three goals in four games, gave up two to the United States in the championship match.
