Canada became the only team other than Mexico and the United States to win the Gold Cup, beating invited guest team Colombia 2-0 in the final. It was the second regional title won by Canada and first since 1985 - when it captured the CONCACAF Nations Cup, which doubled as the World Cup qualifying tournament. Canada only reached the quarterfinals after winning a coin toss with Korea Republic for the last berth in the final eight. All three games in Group D ended in draws, leaving Costa Rica atop the group with four goals scored, but Canada and Korea Republic with identical records. Canada eliminated Mexico in the quarterfinals in extra time (2-1) while Colombia outlasted the United States on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Canada next eliminated Trinidad & Tobago 1-0 while Colombia dispatched fellow South American invited guest team Peru 2-1.
