Mexico reclaimed CONCACAF supremacy with an offensive display, scoring 18 goals in five games and allowing only one. El Tri defeated the United States in their first meeting since the 1991 semifinal, 4-0, before a crowd estimated to be more than 130,000 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The victory was part of a year that included a runner-up finish in the Copa America in the team's first appearance in the South American championship and a successful qualifying run for the 1994 World Cup. Victories over Martinique (9-0) and Canada (8-0) in group play were interrupted by a 1-1 draw against Costa Rica. Forward Luis Roberto Alves established a Gold Cup record by scoring seven goals against Martinique, and finished with 11 for the competition. No other player has scored more than four goals in a Gold Cup tournament before or since. Mexico beat Jamaica in the semifinals 6-0 before overwhelming the USA in the tournament decider.
