The United States stunned the soccer world by becoming the first CONCACAF Gold Cup champion, defeating Mexico 2-0 in the semifinals and Honduras (0-0, 4-3 PKs) in the title match. The USA, led by head coach Bora Milutinovic (former head coach of Mexico and Costa Rica), marched through the group stage, winning three consecutive matches with a plus-five goal differential. In two of those games, the Stars and Stripes came from behind in the second half to win. Goalkeeper Tony Meola, the Gold Cup's first MVP, was spectacular throughout the competition, but especially in the matches against Mexico and Honduras, where he posted shutouts. Pre-tournament favorite Mexico, coming off a 1990 World Cup ban, beat Costa Rica 2-0 to capture third place.
